The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded on Friday to Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who has brought about a spectacular reconciliation between his country and neighboring Eritrea.

Mr. Abiy is being recognized "for his efforts to achieve peace and international cooperation, in particular for his decisive initiative to resolve the border conflict with Eritrea," said Norwegian Nobel Committee Chair Berit Reiss-Andersen.

The award also aims to "recognize all actors working for peace and reconciliation in Ethiopia and the East and North-East African regions," she added.

The Norwegian Committee particularly highlights the role of Eritrean President Issaias Afeworki.

"Peace does not result from the actions of a single actor. When Prime Minister Abiy reached out his hand, President Afwerki grabbed it and helped formalize the peace process between the two countries," he said.

No less than 301 personalities and organizations were in the running this year. After the peace prize, the only one awarded in Oslo, the economics prize will give Monday in Stockholm the final clap for the Nobel season.
