Elections : EU Observers to say up to June

The observation mission of the European Union (UE) for the general election of 10 May 2012 will stay in Algeria until June, said Monday the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

"The EU observers will have a more extended mission unlike the six other missions. They will stay in Algeria until June," said Lahcene Boukhalfa, in charge of studies and statistics at the Foreign Ministry, during a seminar for journalists.

This decision is "in accordance with the agreement signed with the EU regarding the election monitoring and which provides for a three-month mission, before and after the election," said Boukhalfa.

More than 500 foreign observers are expected in Algeria to monitor the election process, announced earlier Foreign Minister Mourad Medelci. There will be 200 observers from the African Union, 120 from the EU, 100 from the Arab League, 20 from the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation and 10 from the United Nations.

The National Democratic Institute and Carter Centre, two non-governmental organizations, have not yet decided about the number of observers to send for the upcoming legislative elections in Algeria, said Boukhalfa.
