Algiers first tramway line, linking the communes of Bordj El Kiffan to Bab-Ezzouar (east of Algiers) over 7.4 km, is to be put into service on May 8th, announced Saturday Transport Minister Amar Tou during an inspection visit to the construction site. The technical trials of this first line began in December 2010, "the necessary measures for the exploitation of this section have been taken, especially for the training of the management teams and the selection of the drivers," Tou assured a month ago. Algiers tram, which will transport about 185,000 travellers daily from and to 38 stations over 23.2 kilometres, will link the eastern suburbs of Algiers to downtown.
