Official data showed that Algeria's spending on grain, semolina and flour imports fell by 14.42 percent in the first eight months of 2019 compared to the same period a year ago.

Algeria, one of the world's largest grain importers, is trying to cut spending on food imports following a decline in energy income, the main source of state revenue. Imports of hard wheat, soft, semolina and flour reached $1.84 billion from January to august this year, down from $2.15 billion in the first eight months of 2018, according to figures released by the Directorate General of Customs.

Total spending on food imports fell to $5.43 billion from $5.90 billion between January and august last year.
