"All initiatives in the Sahel should complement and not substitute our regional approach and there is no viable alternative and effective to our work," said Messahel, who was speaking at the opening of the meeting of foreign ministers of countries in the field.

He justified this Algeria position by his conviction that "the proliferation of initiatives and ideas, which are laudable also, only creates unnecessary and against-productive duplication."

Supporting his remarks, Messahel said that the commitment of the four countries of the core to take national and regional responsibility "is proven" and collective action "is growing and tending towards greater efficiency."

Messahel stressed that the regional framework set up "patiently and methodically" is "focused on our four country format with openings needed on other countries in the region, leaving a space for partnership and cooperation "that can be usefully inserted.
