Ross asks the UN to monitor human rights in Western Sahara
Christopher Ross, the United Nations Secretary-General's Personal Envoy for Western Sahara, has recently asked the UN Security Council to extend the powers of the UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) to monitor human rights in that country, Spanish daily El Pais revealed on Wednesday.
"The human rights issue will hold a prominent place in the renewal of MINURSO's mandate in April," Christopher Ross was quoted as saying before the UN Security Council at a meeting held in camera last 28th January, the newspaper reported. "The Security Council will have to deal with the issue and support it," added the UN official.
This issue will appear in the report to be submitted next April by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to the Security Council, which is expected to decide then on the renewal of MINURSO's mandate.
