Interpol lifts arrest warrant against Belloumi
Interpol has lifted arrest warrant against former Algerian football star Lakhdar Belloumi. The National Police authority has been informed of the case, says the former African Golden Ball winner.
The National Police authority (DGSN) has received a letter to confirm lifting the arrest warrant issued against me since 1990", says Belloumi.
The former Algerian golden midfielder has been accused of hitting an Egyptian Doctor in his eye on the sidelines of a game between Algeria and Egypt in Cairo. It was the 1990 world cup qualifying game won by Egypt 1-0.
Several sports and political personalities have intervened to resolve the issue that prevented Belloumi from travelling abroad. They finally reached a reconciliation agreement that has been sealed in Cairo.
Lakhdar Belloumi (51) was nominated best African football player in 1980. He took part in two successive world cup finals in 1982 (Spain) and 1986 (Mexico). He scored the winning goal for Algeria against Germany in historical game.
